E-mail Print PDF

Passing the TOEFL test is very critical in applying for a school with English environment, getting a job certification for work (teachers or travel guides), or fulfilling a job qualification (editors, copywriter, hotel receptionists or engineers). This test takes 4 hours, the total score is 300, and it comprised of Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. You have to know English grammar, idioms, and tons of vocabularies.

So, there is no simple preparation. You basically need to:

  1. Buy a TOEFL book (a must!) or download from the internet some examples of TOEFL tests. Some books already include CDs, so do the practices often until you get the most wanted passing score. Time your practice!
  2. Ask your English teacher at school to help you understanding some areas .
  3. READ a lot of books or magazines written in English to improve your vocabularies and reading comprehension. Then, always write the summary down.
  4. Listen to popular songs, news or TV talk shows from the U.S. or Great Britain.
  5. Don’t cram the night before the test. SLEEP WELL!
  6. When you take the test, READ each instruction carefully.

Simple tricks:

  1. Synonyms: Never read the whole sentence, just read the bold word and find its synonym, unless you don’t understand its meaning.
  2. Antonym: Just read the bold word and find its antonym.
  3. Listening: practice makes perfect. Try not to hear each word, but to the whole sentence/ or story.
  4. Reading: unless you have mastered the language, don’t read too fast so you could understand the main issue.
  5. Writing: Write frequently about any subject with your pen or computer.
