Building on previous achievements, Erlass Institute offered talented primary school students the opportunity to participate in the Erlass English Speech Contest.   Nearly 50 contestants from Jakarta’s primary schools were found far and wide to participate in the eagerly awaited contest of 2015, with children from 8 to 12.  The aim of the annual contest showcased the contestants’ English-language skills.   Each contestant had to choose either the topic of traditional food in Jakarta or favorite books for their speech during the preliminary stage of the contest on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at Erlass Institute.

During the preliminary stages, the contestants put their best foot forward and their best English skills.   The contestants came from various schools including Kemala Bhayangkari 3 Primary School, Cilandak Timur 03 Primary School, Primary Global Islamic School, Menteng 01 Primary School, Keluarga Widuri Primary School, Strada Wiyatasana Primary School, LPK Faida Cendikia Perdana, Al Biruni Primary School, Pejaten TImur 07 Primary School, MI Asasul Islam and Cilandak Barat 08 Primary School.

Each contestant did their best to show their knowledge and abilities of the topic above and beyond expectations.  Some offered strong voices, others demonstrated body language, diction and mastery of the topic as if English were their first language.

A total of 25 contestants made it to the semi-finals, with strong contenders from Primary Global Islamic School, Strada Wiyatasana Primary School, Menteng 01 Primary School,  and other surprise contestants from Kemala Bahayangkari 3 Primary School, Pejaten Tmur 07 Primary School. Al Biruni Primary School and MI Asasul Islam, Cilandak Timur 03 Primary School, LPK Faida Cendikia Perdana, Cilandak Barat 08 Primary School among others.  It was a pleasure to hear Gabriela Eleonora from Strada Wiyatasana Primary School give an earnest speech about her favorite books and reading as her hobby in the age of video games, social media and movie streaming.  Mikhail Haaritz from Kemala Bhayangkari 3 showed his clear, strong voice and clear use of English during his speech about his favorite food, gado-gado.

The preliminary stage produced standouts and generated 25 contestants who made it to the semifinals and finals held on Saturday February 21 2015.  The 25 contestants at the semi-final presented their speeches about how to make Jakarta a cleaner city.  Each was inspiring in their efforts to make Jakarta cleaner and more livable for everyone.  The jury of 2 editors, Mr. Wibi and Mr. Wahyu and a native speaker from the United States, Mr. Moigu, did their best to evaluate each contestant at the semi-finals.

Time flew by quickly during the semi-finals when the number of contestants were further reduced to 10 finalists selected by the jury.  Each contestant at the finals was inspiring and gave effort to a speech that they had to imagine as they were young and have not reached adulthood.

Mathilda Amadea Keo from Strada Wiyatasana Primary School spoke about being a veterinarian as she had 2 pet dogs and liked them for their loyalty.  Sechan Harun from Primary Global Islamic School spoke about using robotics in his work as a doctor to heal people and using his favorite robot Boymax as an example.   Alifya Widya Cahyani from Kemala Bhayangkari 3 Primary School gave her all about caring for children and pregnant women.  Hasna Hafidzah showed caring for women and children as her strong suit for her speech.

The jury deliberated on the 10 contestants who could be selected as the three champions and three runner-ups.  They were the standouts among the various contestants and stayed strong throughout the contest.

Among the runner-ups, jury member Mr. Wibi announced the winners including Hasna Hafidzah (Al Biruni Primary School) as 3rd Runner-up with her steady voice and knowledge of her topic; Andrea Kirana Yulianto (Primary Global Islamic School) as 2nd Runner-up with graceful and friendly disposition; Faaiz A. Dewhanto (Primary Global Islamic School) as 1st Runner-up showed confidence.

Jury member Mr. Wahyu announced the three winners including Sechan Harun (Primary Global Islamic School) 3rd place winner, Mathilda Amadea Keo (Strada Wiyatasana Primary School) as 2nd place winner and Gabriela Eleonora (Strada Wiyatasana Primary School) as 1st place winner.

Sechan was surprised to be among the winners as he felt upset at the end of his speech and ran out and cried because he was fearful that the other students would laugh at him.  But nothing could be further from the truth as he showed confidence and very good use of English.   Gabriela Eleonora (Strada Wiyatasana Primary School) stayed consistent from voice control, presentation and clear use of English.  Mr. Moigu gave his final comments to all the contestants, parents and teachers about learning English as a tool to find out about other subjects such as information technology, science and literature.  English is a language that everyone would use all their lives for work, studies and everyday use.   Congratulations to all the contestants of Erlass English Speech Contest 2015!
