To improve their English abilities, 22 editors from famous Indonesian publisher Penerbit Erlangga have stepped up to the challenge and gearing up for the test in cooperation with Kaplan Education and Erlass Institute as training organizer. There are divided in 2 separate groups have been actively following TOEFL iBT® (Internet-Based Test), with each group undergoing 2-week training sessions to help them acquire the test-taking skills and reach the desired score of 90.

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is aimed at students and professionals whose native language is not English.  The intensive 3-hour test is conducted entirely by computer and covers Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking with the highest test score at 120.

They are provided with books on Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing strategies under the helpful instruction of an American teacher, Chris Arterbury, from Seattle, Washington.  Chris offers his extensive experience with TOEFL iBT and intensively trains all the editors.  After 3 sessions, the editors undergo TOEFL iBT Practice test with 3 tests in their training. The fun speaking game involved having one person each from both teams to face the class without looking at the board about the topic.  Funny and instructive, this Speaking training prompted the editors to use more of their abilities.

They learned to organize their thoughts on a topic for the Writing test.  They are given a rundown of the writing process from the topic to the reasons. They must provide an introduction with examples and reasons and conclusion on the topic offered during the test.  They have 15 seconds to prepare notes and 45 seconds to speak as part of their exercises.  Chris gives them homework and urges them to refer to the websiteenglishpage.com to learn more about effective use of English.

TOEFL iBT’s highest score is 120.  “Universities such as Harvard will accept TOEFL iBT scores of 100 at the undergraduate level, but it is higher at the graduate level,” Chris said.  His alma mater, New York University, accepts TOEFL iBT score of 92 at the undergraduate level, 100 at the graduate level.  Oxford University requires score of 110, while Boston University requires TOEFL iBT score of 84 at the undergraduate level and 95 at the graduate level.  TOEFL iBt scores are valid for 2 years and can be used towards scholarships, research programs and English proficiency.

The editors are due to take the test on June 25, 2016 in Jakarta and they receive score reports and certificates from Kaplan.
