These days, reading materials come in many forms, including books and software application. If you have writing or drawing talent, you should try writing books that educate and entertain kids. You are young; you might think you have the talent and time to do it. You could see that in every bookstore in Jakarta, there is a children section that offers thousand of titles and all comes in several sizes, forms, colors, and materials.
The good thing about writing a children’s book is that you promote reading as a good hobby. It also actually helps you to practice your writing skill, improve your drawing or design abilities, or even expand your social links with a group of people such as parents, teachers, designers, writers, bloggers, children, and even local publishers.
How do we start trying to write one? Remember, children learn by: listening, seeing, and doing (audio, visual, and movement).
These are some easy steps:
- Choose one or two main characters: a small boy/girl, an animal, a flower, a pair of shoes.
- Think of a simple event or problem: Budi goes to Supmarket
- Create a happy ending
- Make your own front cover, back cover and 8 pages of vivid stories that can provoke all their 5 senses: touch, feel, listen, smell, and see.
- Ask your little brother/sister/nephew to read it and seethey have difficulties understanding your words. Simplicity is key, so don’t try to use long sentences!1.
