How to deliver a simple, yet convincing speech
Are you ready to deliver a simple and yet informative speech with confidence that is easy for the audience to comprehend? Writing a speech is very difficult because you must be able ton convey your thought to your audience. However, the ability to deliver it without fear is another big task. Either you nail it, or you fail it. Do you remember our first President Ir. Soekarno? Try to watch a video of his speech and take note on his techniques.
Erlass would organize an English speech contest for children (10-12 years old) starting June 18th for the preliminary stage. It would not be easy for each student to deliver a speech in a foreign language. They would need some guidance from their parents or teachers.
In this contest, jurors would see how each contestant tries explain his/her thoughts about certain topic in English. Each contestant is expected to express basic ideas in Basic English with simple present and future tenses. He/she does not have to master English language or have a 550 TOEFL score. Students are allowed to bring list of points of his/her speech, written on a small note. Simple speech, original, and motivating usually wins people’s hearts.
Here are simple steps to help yourself/your student to overcome some problems:
- You have to know your material. Choose the topic you feel comfortable. Use some personal stories or humor, and then you won’t forget what you are going to say. Be totally immersed with your topic.
- Practice everyday. Use some outline. Practice with a timer (your cellular has a stopwatch) and don’t forget to stop or breath between sentences. Ask your family or friends or teachers to be your audience.
- Know the audience. Meaning, you know already who would be listening to your speech. At erlass, there would be some jurors, parents, or your peers who could listen to your speech.
- Arrive early (at least 30 minutes earlier), so you have time to feel comfortable with the environment
- Don’t get too nervous. The first seconds are to buy the heart of your jurors/audience, and these seconds would give you time to pause, relax, and calm down. Try to make yourself feel excited, motivated, and enthusiastic.
- Your voice should loud, clear, and confident.
- Your audience wants you to succeed. They want you to be able to deliver an interesting, informative and of course, entertaining.
- Never apologize if you feel that have delivered a bad speech. Never let your audience knows about some technical problems.
- You have to focus on your theme and the content. You must be able to deliver your message. That’s all they want to know.
