Due to growing interest and importance in English, Erlass English for Children course was established in January 2014 for students at elementary school. Children are known to absorb new languages with certain ease. The course is available in 6 levels according to age and school grade, with an emphasis on small classes of 3 to 8 students in the classroom.
Each of the 6 different levels is taught over a 4.5-months period with a book and student handouts.
Each level is held for three months and students have an exam at the end of the term. The course is designed to encourage the student to explore ideas using English language. It is intended to get students easily involved in the activity. They become part of the active teaching and learning process should be more. The students listen, are encouraged to express their ideas, give their suggestions and make a conclusion as they improve their skills. They are usually asked to describe, retell, give comment, and analyze something that they had heard or saw before from the class materials.
Apart from learning the basics such as alphabet and numbers, this year’s students have been learning about the weather and animals of Africa from Level 3. The classes are taught in an amusing atmosphere to help students be happy and comfortable. This helps them to feel confident and enjoy the topic discussed. Therefore they can speak out, to sing out and to act or offer other kinds of response. It also helps them
be creative in their thinking and actions.
The following is an example of Erlass English for Children’s class activity lesson plan:
Step 1 : the students are shown some pictures and they have to describe them.
Step 2 : then the teacher ask one of the students to mention the name of items in the picture and the others repeat in the classroom with guidance from the teacher in case the student forgets one or two items and the other students are listening.
Step 1 and Step 2 = 15 minutes. (Listening activity)
Step 3 : then teacher the ask the other student to join him to help him to analyze
Step 4 : Expressing opinions
Step 5 :Activity
Step 3, Step 4, Step 5 = 40 minutes ( speaking activity)
Step 6 : Express a story and writing activity
Step 6 = 20 minutes
